not alone

“Wherever they's a fight so hungry people can eat, I'll be there. Wherever they's a cop beatin' up a guy, I'll be there... I'll be in the way guys yell when they're mad an'—I'll be in the way kids laugh when they're hungry and they know supper's ready. An' when our folk eat the stuff they raise an' live in the houses they build—why, I'll be there.”
– Tom Joad, The Grapes of Wrath

One of the best things about being a writer is this online community we’ve got. We’re here for each other. Whenever one of us needs to shout something worth shouting from the rooftops, we appear en masse to rejoice with virtual slaps on the back. Whenever we’re down in the pits of despair due to woes every struggling artist knows , we’re here to lend a sympathetic comment or few.

Writers inspire writers. And thanks to Aaron Polson’s recent post, I’m here to give six of my fellow writers a well-deserved shout-out. They certainly live up to the “Write Hard Spirit” as described in detail here.

Each has been a constant source of inspiration to me since I entered the blogosphere as an unpublished writer, and I wouldn’t trade their encouraging comments for anything. I give you all this single exhortation: “Continue being awesome!”

On the writing front, this has been a week for good news. My story “Breathe” was purchased by Golden Visions Magazine, and my “Captain Quasar” story was nominated in the Preditors & Editors Readers’ Poll (which doesn’t close until the 26th, by the way).

In Write1Sub1 news, we’re up to 91 participants, and I’ve got this week’s story out: “Starlight” to Fantasy. Despite plenty of past rejections from this market, I remain hopeful.

  1. Milo,

Many, many thanks. I wasn't aware I was being in any way awesome but I'm glad you think so! Great news on Breathe and good luck with Fantasy. You can do it.

  2. Hey, that's me! I'm speechless. This was better than any award.

Thanks, Milo! Keep writing, or I'll hunt you down and extract Captain Quasar from you by force. I demand a sequel!

  7. Simon: You absolutely reek with awesomeness, sir!

Stephanie: So far Ray Gun Revival and Escape Pod have rejected Quasar's sequel, but it's currently in the hands of Flagship...

Deborah: Yes indeed; I'm hoping not to bungle it majorly.

    Eagle: Gracias!

    N.R.: Likewise =]

Jennifer: One of these days, I'm going to read all of your early posts -- you know, before you became agented, rich, and famous. Then I shall follow in your footsteps.

  10. I love the encouragement I get from other writers here in Blogville. I have learned so much from the wisdom shared in blog posts. You're right about this online community being one of the best things we've got!

  11. Very nice of you to offer attention to your fellow bloggers! I follow some already, and will be sure to follow the others. Always nice to see a classy entry like this.

  12. Lily: After attending a writers' conference in the fall of '09, I followed the advice I heard to enter "Blogville" in order to build a platform of sorts and accumulate readers for the fiction I hoped to sell in the future. I had no idea of the value this blogging community would come to have in the form of an online support group!

Samuel: They are classy writers, worthy of an entry much classier than this one. =]

  13. Milo-glad to see the ball of your success is still merrily rolling downhill. it's wonderful how prolific you are, and still to produce such fine work. Congratulations!

  14. Milo-should be: still "able" to produce fine work.

  16. Marty: I'm sure it's all downhill from here, but it sure feels like I'm Sisyphus sometimes, rolling that old boulder uphill. "The struggle itself...is enough to fill a man's heart."

Steve: Thanks man; but who wrote 4, subbed 2 last week? Yes, that would be YOU, sir!

  19. Congratulations Milo! Your perseverance and dedication are truly inspirational. Most people would have given up after a couple rounds of rejections.

As Granma Joad put it: "We come out an' Grampa, he reached for the shovel-shelf right off".
