use the blorce

Despite the fact that I’ve been blogging away here at in medias res since last November, I still feel like a newbie in the blogosphere. Case in point: I didn’t realize what “blogger awards” were for or what to do with them. I was like Luke Skywalker in the muck and mire of Dagobah without Yoda to whisper sweet nothings into my ear. The blorce (blogger + force = ridiculous hybrid word) was not strong in this one...

But after some careful research, I realized these awards are part of an intricate “pay it forward” system where you get to share the love you’ve received from your fellow bloggers.

My two girly awards go to everyone on my blogroll: “From Me to You,” you each have “One Lovely Blog.” That’s why I follow you so closely!

And last, but not least, is the “Bold Faced Liar/Writer Award” I recently received from Cort Ellyn. Here are a few truths and lies about myself. You get to decide which are which:

1. At 16, I shook hands with President Bush.

2. I have climbed the Great Wall of China.

3. I have been a vegetarian most of my life.

4. In 2005, I enjoyed the Eiffel Tower much more than the London Eye.

5. I like to mountain bike and surf – but not at the same time.

6. I have never had anything published prior to this year.

Think you’ve got it figured out?

As part of the “pay it forward” system, I now nominate the following writers to do the same: Justin, Polenth, Bernard, Zoe, Adam – and anyone else who dares follow suit!

    And you've done a lot.

  2. I had a lot of awards posted on my sidebar and finally took them down as I think it took longer for blogger to load with all the extras I had. I like how you did this. Straight and to the point. I may copy it one of these days.

  3. "...an intricate “pay it forward” system where you get to share the love you’ve received from your fellow bloggers."

Nicely described and nicely payed forward. It's great to be recognized by others. At times though, when inundated with these awards from others, I refer to them as the less flattering "pyramid scheme".

  4. Many people apparently think I'm a versatile blogger. I'm not 100% sure how to take that realization. ;) Thanks, Milo!

  5. Oh, dear... I think... #4 is true and the rest are lies. Hmmm... can't wait to find out.

And thanks for the "Going Places" award. Yay!

  6. Hi Milo,

Thanks! I'm going places? That's great to know. Hey, you're a fellow vegetarian too. I've just counted up and I've been one for 25 years!

Must admit I've been trying really hard to keep my blog uncluttered and minimalist, so perhaps I can create a static page for the award. Kind of like a trophy shelf ...

There are always new things to discover in the blogosphere so don't think it's just you!

  7. Alex: Yes indeed; I'll post a comment on Friday to let everybody know which statements are true/false.

    Karen: Feel free!

Alan: If only there were some $$ involved...

Mesmerix: Between your book reviews and blogfests and writing updates, I'd say you are quite versatile.

Cort: Well-deserved; your name is in PRINT! #4? Hmmmm. You'll find out Friday.

Simon: Uncluttered and minimalist is the way to go; and I'll let everybody know on Friday whether I've ever been a vegetarian...

  10. You gave me an award! Cool! But... where am I going? ;)

I have no idea which statements are true and which ones are lies. Can't wait to find out. (You will tell us, right?)

  11. Milo,
Aw, I'm doubting that one now! I was sure that was one of the true ones.

  12. Thanks, Madeleine and Marty.

Jennifer: You are well into the Published Land! Friday I shall divulge the verity of my claims.

    Simon: Hmmmmmm... =)

  14. Now I've got to pick this up and run with it. Thanks for the surprise, and the link!

I'm going to guess that #2 is false.

  15. 1, 3 and 6 are not true about you...I think....but then again, I'm often wrong.

  16. Zoe: You are most welcome; it isn't very girly.

Adam: #2? Hmmm. You'll find out Friday!

    BOB!! Perhaps...Perhaps not...

  17. Aw shucks, thank you, Milo! And I don't mind girlie (being a chick and all), so I'll gladly accept the Lovely Blog award you gifted to your blogroll, too :)

Hm...for some reason I'll guess that 1,2,4,&5 are true...

  18. Ah grasshopper, you are so close to the truth...

  19. Hi Milo.

Thanks for the award, but mainly for a lively and relevant blog. I enjoy your entries a great deal; your stories as well, though I need to see more of them published. Work on that won't you?

My guess is #6 because it is the least believable of the bunch.

  20. Thanks Steve. I'm on it! 21 submissions out... and waiting. And waiting. I'm trying to follow your example by submitting to WotF; we'll see how that goes.

    #6? Hmmmmm.

  21. The truth be told:

    1. TRUE. We were in the front row of a local environmental gathering, and I was told by my mother not to let go once I had a hold of his hand -- to be sure we got a photo of it. In the end, there was no photo, but I have a vivid memory of a very awkward moment as the President tried to pry off my clammy grip.

    2. TRUE. It was the dead of winter, icy and frigid, but I was there visiting a college friend who taught English outside of Beijing, and of course I had to see the sights. A once in a lifetime experience, mos def.

    3. TRUE. While I currently eat some chicken, turkey, and fish every now and then, for a solid twenty years of my life, I consumed a totally meat-free diet.

    4. FALSE. My late-night Eiffel Tower experience was elbow to elbow with very little room to breathe, while the London Eye was decidedly more relaxing and scenic during daylight hours.

    5. TRUE. Although I don't get out as much as I used to, little else compares to riding a smooth left break that never ends or barreling downhill with full suspension.

    6. TRUE. January 2010 marked the first-time publication of this struggling writer: "Hero for Hire" in A Fly in Amber.

    Thanks for playing along, everybody!

  22. Ah, I knew the vegetarian thing was true! Agree about the Great Wall too - it's pretty incredible.

    ReplyDelete
  23. What made it more incredible was that, despite all the ice, I didn't slip 'n' slide to my death!

  24. You never had anything published before January of this year? You've had one amazing year! :)

  25. Not too shabby. I started submitting my work in July of 2009, and I've learned a lot about the process along the way. Still waiting to hear back from quite a few literary agencies on my novel-length queries, but I guess that's par for the course...
